Breast Augmentation

In the question of whether the breast is too small, the overall silhouette of each woman provides an individual framework: with the proportion of her body size to the ribcage and pelvis. The decision regarding breast augmentation ultimately rests with the woman's personal judgment and her concepts of a feminine silhouette and the desired breast size. Our experienced breast surgeon Leonard Nenad Josipovic helps patients at Rosenpark Clinic find the shape and size that is best for them.

Reasons for breast augmentation:

  • The aesthetic desire for a larger bust, given normal breast structure and size (breast euplasia)
  • Overly small breasts in proportion to body size and weight (breast hypoplasia)
  • Nearly complete absence of the mammary gland (breast aplasia)
  • Breasts of different sizes with significant psychological strain and the need for concealment with bra inserts (breast asymmetry)
  • Breast malformations – for example a tubular breast (with a tube-like appearance)

When is breast augmentation worthwhile?

The surgery should be according to your own desire to improve your attractiveness – and never be performed merely at the urging of others. Healthy patients with a realistic view as to what appropriate surgery can achieve are suitable candidates. Special consultation is needed in the case of a high hereditary breast cancer risk as well as following breast cancer surgery.

How is it performed?

Each breast augmentation can only be performed legitimately by means of an implant. In this process, the patient's individual physical conditions specify the scope. In the consultation with you, your doctor will develop a treatment plan that is individually appropriate for you. The open discussion is an important foundation for the breast augmentation process and the best precondition for your satisfaction with the result.

Possible surgical approaches:

  • In the fold underneath the breast (inframammary)
  • Via the armpit (transaxillary)
  • At the edge of the nipple (periareolar)

Possible positions of the implant:

  • On the pectoral muscle (epipectoral)
  • Partially underneath the pectoral muscle (partially submuscular)
  • Completely underneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular)

What sort of anesthesia is required?

Breast augmentation is performed in semiconscious sleep or under general anaesthesia. You can find more information under anaesthesia.

When can I resume normal daily activities?

After a night in the clinic, an initial examination will be performed and you will receive a special bra and medication. Then you will be discharged. You may generally return to work after a few days – except for occupations involving heavy physical exertion. In the first four to six weeks, it is recommended that strain to the upper body be avoided. Athletic activities which cause the breasts to swing or sway should be avoided.

You can find more information in our "Breast surgery" information sheets, which you can request from us free of charge.
